Satalia, a UCL Business spin out from the Department of Computer Science at UCL has awarded funding of €465,000 to academics at University of Klagenfurt’s Institute of Mathematics.
Award-winning researcher Assistant Professor Dr. Phillip Hungerlander leads the team on this two-year project, which will generate disruptive innovations in Artificial Intelligence and Optimisation Solutions.
The pairing of the Hungerländer academics with Satalia’s own scientists forms a strong multidisciplinary research team of optimisation experts, which will apply methods such as constraint programming and hybrid heuristic optimisation. Termed SORT (the Satalia Optimisation Research Team), their primary goal is to build a state-of-the-art platform for solving large-scale problems with multiple real-world constraints, including in real-time. These types of problems are core to many business efficiency challenges such as vehicle routing, staff scheduling and infrastructure planning, in which Satalia already boasts a number of high profile customers.

● DDr. Philipp Hungerländer: is Professor for Mathematics at the Alpen-Adria-Universität. Philipp was the head of the Austrian Optimization Team.
● Dr. Andrea Rendl Pitrey: PhD in Computer Science, St Andrews University, UK. Andrea was one of the contributing developers of MiniZinc project and specialises in optimizing realworld applications from transportation and logistics.
● Dr. Markus Aschinger: PhD in Computer Science, Oxford University, UK. Markus developed LoCo, a logicbased highlevel representation language for expressing technical product configuration problems.
● Jörg Pöcher: studied Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics and brings several years of industry experience as a senior software developer. The research project will be the focus of his PhD in Optimisation.
● Christian Truden: studied Mathematics with a minor in computer science. Christian will work alongside Jörg to complete his PhD in Optimisation.
● Kerstin Maier: undergraduate in a double degree in Mathematics and Computer science, takes a special interest in building state-of-the-art mathematical programming models. In her work with Satalia this year Kerstin has designed and implemented an integer linear programming model for determining optimised timetables for UCL, outperformed all known competing methods.
●Anna Jellen: undergraduate in Mathematics, takes a special interest in building state-of-the-art mathematical programming models. In her work with Satalia this year Anna has worked on problems related to the Traveling Salesperson Problem and the Bin Packing Problem.
● Yohann Pitrey: is a Software Engineer, he worked on several projects.
● Paul Alexandru Bucur: studied Mathematics, Alex worked on the timetable project for UCL.
● Günther Cwioro: undergraduate in Computer Science. Despite his young age, Günther has gained an impressive and relevant complement of experience as a software developer in industry.
